Chesapeake Celiac Support Group is an independant Support Group for Celiacs and Gluten Intolerants. We meet the 2nd Friday of every month at the Sajak Pavilion, Suite 250 in Annapolis, Maryland from 6:30p - 8:30p

Our Mission Statement is:
To support and educate each other and the surrounding community about Celiac Disease and gluten-intolerance.

2008 is our year to concentrate on eating nutritiously, dealing with the emotional as well as physical changes in going gluten-free and making good choices in our daily lives. All of the speakers & presentations are selected to bring us the information that we need to maintain a healthy, gluten-free lifestyle. We hope that you can make as many of the meetings as possible so that you will have the information and tools to make good food decisions in your life. Gluten-Free is a very healthy lifestyle and we are lucky that this is all it takes to control our disease! We hope to see you all there!

May 9 - Nancy J. Miller-Ihli, Ph.D will present the Health Benefits of Low Glycemic Eating (Celiac Focus). Nancy provides full seminar series on this healthy diet which fits right into our special needs!

Here is a brief article by Nancy that will allow you a taste of what her presentation will entail!

Many people are not enthused about eating low glycemic (eating in a way to stabilize your blood sugar level). Why? Because so many things in the US diet break down quickly in our bodies into simple sugars. It's not just cookies and candy that are a problem. One of the most high glycemic foods that we need to avoid is bread because wheat breaks down quickly into simple carbohydrates and people don't want to give up sanwiches. You may think whole wheat bread or whole grain is better but most all bread is high glycemic unless it is very high in fiber.

People who eat a low-GI diet are surprised at how easy it is to give up gluten once they've become careful about their sugar intake. I work with people who are gluten sensitive and they are surprised at how much sugar they ingest in their daily diet. One of the reasons for this is that many of the special gluten-free foods are extremely high in sugar. We see the same thing with many low fat foods. My intention is to educate people about the potential benefits of eating gluten-free low GI because low GI offers the possibility of reducing cardiovascular risk, reducing inflammation, decreasing the risk of diabetes and it also allows individuals to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Jun 13 - Carol Linarducci from Epicure Distribution out of New Jersey, will bring samples and give a short presentation as well as this will be our quarterly sharing meeting.
